Best Engine Oil Viscosity for Australian Cars

Your engine oil is doing its hardest work when you are stuck in Newcastle traffic, making short school runs, towing a trailer, or heading up the highway on a hot day. Choosing the best engine oil viscosity is not about picking the thickest oil on the shelf. It is about using the grade your engine was designed to run, in the conditions it actually faces.

The wrong oil may not cause an immediate breakdown, but it can affect cold starts, fuel use, oil pressure, engine wear and the way variable valve timing systems operate. For most drivers, the safest answer is straightforward: use the viscosity and oil specification listed in the owner’s handbook or on the oil cap. If there is any doubt, ask a qualified mechanic before topping up or booking a service.

What engine oil viscosity numbers mean

Oil viscosity is its resistance to flowing. Thin oil flows more easily, while thicker oil maintains a heavier film between moving engine parts. Modern oils are usually multigrade, shown as numbers such as 0W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40 or 10W-40.

The number before the W describes how the oil behaves when cold. The lower the number, the easier the oil flows on a cold start. That matters because a large share of normal engine wear occurs in the first moments after starting, before oil has fully circulated.

The second number describes the oil’s viscosity when the engine is at operating temperature. A 30-grade oil is thinner at temperature than a 40-grade oil. Thicker is not automatically better. An engine designed for 0W-20 may rely on that thinner oil to reach tight internal passages quickly and to support its fuel-efficiency and emissions systems.

For example, 5W-30 oil gives good cold-flow performance and remains a 30-grade oil when hot. It is common in many late-model petrol and diesel vehicles. A 5W-40 oil behaves similarly at start-up but is thicker once hot, which may suit some engines and operating conditions where the manufacturer permits it.

The best engine oil viscosity is the one specified for your vehicle

Every engine has its own oil requirements. Two cars of a similar age, or even two versions of the same model, can require different grades and approvals. Turbocharged engines, modern diesels with particulate filters, direct-injection petrol engines and many hybrids are especially particular about the oil they use.

Your owner’s handbook should list the recommended viscosity, acceptable alternatives for certain temperatures, and the required performance standard. The oil cap may show a viscosity grade, but it does not always provide the full specification. Both matter.

As well as a grade such as 5W-30, look for the required standard. This may be an API, ACEA, manufacturer approval or low-SAPS requirement. These specifications cover more than thickness. They relate to additives, deposit control, wear protection, compatibility with emissions equipment and how the oil performs over its service interval.

Using a 5W-30 simply because it is a common grade is not enough if your vehicle requires a particular 5W-30 formulation. This is one reason a proper service involves more than draining oil and fitting a filter.

Do Australian conditions mean you need thicker oil?

Not necessarily. Wallsend and the wider Newcastle area can see warm summer days, but modern manufacturer recommendations already account for normal Australian conditions. Most current vehicles are engineered around relatively low-viscosity oils because they provide fast lubrication at start-up and help reduce fuel consumption.

Moving from 5W-30 to 10W-40 just because the weather is warm can be a poor choice unless the handbook allows it or there is a specific mechanical reason. A thicker oil may take longer to circulate when cold and may not suit tight internal tolerances, hydraulic lifters, turbocharger oil feeds or variable valve timing components.

The exception is where a mechanic has assessed an older or worn engine and recommends a different approved grade. Higher kilometres, oil consumption, low oil pressure or operation under sustained heavy load can change the conversation. The key word is assessed. Changing viscosity should be based on the vehicle’s condition, not guesswork.

Common oil grades and where they are used

There is no single best grade for every vehicle, but these examples explain why different oils exist.

0W-20 is common in newer petrol engines, hybrids and some late-model vehicles designed for maximum fuel efficiency. It flows very well at start-up and is often required by the manufacturer. It should not be replaced with a thicker grade without checking the handbook.

5W-30 is one of the most widely used grades across modern petrol and diesel cars, SUVs and 4WDs. However, it is available in several different formulations, so the correct approval remains essential.

5W-40 is used in some turbo petrol, diesel and performance applications. It offers a thicker oil film at operating temperature than a 30-grade oil, but it is only suitable where specified or approved.

10W-40 is often found in older petrol engines and some vehicles with higher kilometres. It can be appropriate for the right engine, though it is not a universal solution for oil use or engine noise.

15W-40 is frequently used in particular diesel, commercial and older-engine applications. Many modern diesels need a more specialised low-ash oil, so do not assume a traditional diesel grade is suitable.

When a different viscosity may be justified

A vehicle’s age and condition can matter as much as its make and model. If an older engine is using oil between services, rattling at start-up, showing low oil pressure or producing blue smoke, it needs diagnosis before choosing a thicker oil.

Oil consumption can come from external leaks, worn piston rings, valve stem seals, a blocked breather system, turbocharger issues or incorrect oil. A thicker grade may reduce consumption in some cases, but it will not repair a leak or internal fault. It can also mask a problem that should be addressed before it becomes more expensive.

Likewise, an engine that has overheated or has sludge buildup should not be treated with an oil change alone. Cooling system faults, poor service history and incorrect previous oil can all contribute to damage. A workshop can inspect the oil condition, filter, cooling system and engine operation to work out what is actually going on.

Do not mix oils unless it is an emergency top-up

If the oil level is low, topping up promptly is better than continuing to drive below the minimum mark. Ideally, use the same oil already in the engine. If that is unavailable, use an oil that meets the required specification and viscosity as closely as possible.

Mixing compatible oils in a small amount is generally acceptable as an emergency measure, but it is not a substitute for using the correct oil at the next service. Avoid mixing random grades, using oil meant for a different engine type, or adding thick additives in an attempt to quiet engine noise.

Check the oil level on level ground, with the engine off and following the procedure in the handbook. Do not overfill it. Too much oil can cause its own problems, including aeration, leaks and damage to emissions components in some vehicles.

Short trips, towing and 4WD use change service needs

Viscosity is only one part of looking after an engine. A car that mainly does short trips may not get hot enough to evaporate moisture and fuel dilution from the oil. Stop-start driving, long idling, towing, dusty roads and regular 4WD use can also place greater demands on the oil.

Under these conditions, the manufacturer may recommend a shorter service interval. This is particularly relevant for vehicles that appear to do low kilometres but spend plenty of time on local trips. Time, driving pattern and load all matter, not just the number on the odometer.

For turbocharged vehicles, regular oil and filter changes are especially worthwhile. Clean, correctly specified oil protects the turbocharger bearings, which operate at very high speed and temperature. Skipping services to save money can turn into a far more costly repair later.

Petrol, diesel, hybrid and EV servicing

Petrol and diesel engines require engine oil, but their specifications can differ greatly. Modern diesels may need low-SAPS oils to protect diesel particulate filters. Petrol engines can require oils designed to reduce low-speed pre-ignition in turbocharged direct-injection engines.

Hybrids still have an internal-combustion engine and need the correct engine oil, even though the engine may run differently from a conventional car. It is easy to overlook servicing because a hybrid can use less fuel, but its engine oil still ages over time.

A full battery electric vehicle does not have engine oil because it has no combustion engine. It still needs regular checks of brakes, tyres, suspension, coolant systems where fitted and other safety items.
