A lot of people hear that EVs need "almost no servicing" and assume that means no workshop visits at all. That is not how it works in the real world. An EV replaces much of that with an electric motor, high-voltage battery and associated control systems. There is no engine oil to replace, no spark plugs to wear out and no exhaust system to inspect for the usual combustion-related issues. In day-to-day servicing terms, that removes a fair bit of routine maintenance.

That said, fewer service items does not mean lower importance. EV servicing often places more focus on software checks, battery health, electrical safety, thermal management systems and the condition of supporting mechanical components. The work may be less frequent in some areas, but the workshop still needs the right knowledge and process.

What gets serviced on a petrol vehicle

For most petrol cars, routine servicing is built around preventing wear before it becomes a major repair. Oil degrades over time, filters clog, ignition components age and fluids need checking or replacing. If these basics are missed, the costs can climb quickly.

A standard petrol service may include engine oil and oil filter replacement, fluid checks, brake inspection, tyre wear assessment, battery testing, cooling system checks and a general look over steering, suspension and belts. Typical EV servicing may include brake checks, tyre inspection and rotation where required, suspension and steering checks, cabin filter replacement, cooling system inspection, battery and charging system assessment, and diagnostic scans to identify faults or software-related concerns. The 12-volt battery still matters too, because many EVs rely on it for essential vehicle functions.

Brakes are a good example of where people get caught out. EVs often use regenerative braking, which can reduce wear on brake pads and discs. That sounds like a bonus, and it is, but reduced use can also mean corrosion or sticking components if the brakes are not checked regularly. So the service need changes, rather than disappearing.

Is EV servicing cheaper?

Often, yes. Always, no.

In many cases, an EV will cost less to service over time because there are fewer scheduled replacement items. No oil changes alone remove a regular ongoing cost. There is also less engine-related complexity, which can reduce the chance of certain mechanical failures common in petrol vehicles.

But the answer depends on the vehicle, how it is driven and what stage of ownership you are at. Those jobs are less common than petrol engine maintenance, but they are not backyard work and they need proper equipment and training.

Petrol cars are usually more predictable in routine servicing, especially for drivers used to set intervals and standard service items. EVs can be cheaper across the long run, but when faults do occur, the right workshop matters just as much as the price.

The trade-offs most people should think about

Petrol servicing is more familiar. Most drivers understand what an oil change is, what a misfire feels like and why a cooling system check matters. Parts availability is often straightforward, and many independent workshops have broad experience across common makes and models.

EV servicing is generally lighter on routine maintenance, but it asks more of the workshop when specialist diagnosis is needed. It also asks owners to pay attention to different issues, such as charging performance, battery thermal management and software-related faults.

There is also the question of long-term ownership. If you plan to keep a vehicle for years, lower routine EV servicing costs may appeal. If you cover regional kilometres, tow regularly, or want a simpler second-hand buying market, a petrol vehicle may still suit you better. It depends on how you use the car, not just what is fashionable.

So which one is easier to own?

From a servicing point of view, EVs are usually simpler on routine maintenance. Petrol cars usually need more regular mechanical attention. That is the broad truth.

But easier to own is not only about the service schedule. It is about having access to the right workshop, getting clear advice, protecting your warranty where relevant and catching problems early before they turn expensive. A good service experience is rarely about whether the car runs on petrol or battery alone. It is about whether the people working on it know what they are doing.
