How to Check Coolant Leaks Before They Cause Trouble

A small coolant leak can turn into an overheated engine on the way to work, a failed radiator hose on a weekend trip, or expensive engine damage if it is ignored. Knowing how to check coolant leaks gives you a chance to act early, before a warning light, steam from the bonnet or a rising temperature gauge forces the issue.

Coolant, also called engine coolant or radiator fluid, does more than stop an engine from overheating. It protects internal cooling-system components from corrosion and helps the engine operate at a stable temperature. If the level keeps dropping, there is usually a reason - even when no obvious puddle is sitting on the driveway.

Start with safety: only inspect a cold engine

Never remove a radiator cap or coolant reservoir cap while the engine is hot. A hot cooling system is under pressure, and hot coolant can spray out with enough force to cause serious burns. Leave the car parked on level ground and allow the engine to cool fully, ideally for several hours or overnight.

With the engine cold, open the bonnet and locate the coolant overflow reservoir. It is usually a translucent plastic bottle with minimum and maximum level markings. The coolant should sit between those marks. If it is below the minimum line, do not simply keep topping it up and forget about it. Make a note of the level, check for signs of leakage and monitor it again after a few normal drives.

Coolant colours vary between vehicles. It may be red, green, blue, orange or pink, depending on the type specified by the manufacturer. Colour is not a reliable guide to coolant compatibility, so do not mix different products unless you know they are suitable for your vehicle.

How to check coolant leaks around the engine bay

Most external coolant leaks can be found with a good torch, a clean rag and a careful visual inspection. Look for wet areas, dried residue, staining or a sweet smell around cooling-system components. Coolant can dry before you inspect it, leaving behind a white, pink, green or crusty deposit rather than a visible drip.

Start at the radiator and work your way around the hoses. Check the upper and lower radiator hoses, smaller heater hoses, hose clamps and plastic fittings. Pay close attention to joins, bends and areas where a hose may rub against another component. A hose that feels unusually soft, swollen, cracked or brittle should be inspected by a mechanic, even if it has not started leaking yet.

Next, inspect the radiator itself. Leaks commonly appear around the plastic end tanks, the radiator core or hose connections. Stones, road debris and age can damage the radiator, while corrosion can gradually weaken it from the inside. Look through the front grille area for staining, damaged fins or damp patches, but avoid poking anything through the radiator fins.

The radiator cap is another simple but often overlooked item. Its seal and spring help the system maintain the correct pressure. If the seal is worn, split or hardened, coolant may escape as vapour or seep from the cap area. A faulty cap can also allow the system to lose pressure, which lowers the coolant’s boiling point and makes overheating more likely.

Check around the thermostat housing and water pump as well. Depending on the engine layout, these may be less visible, but a torch can reveal dried coolant marks beneath the housing or around the pump. A water pump may leak through a small relief hole when its internal seal begins to fail. Coolant staining near the front of the engine, particularly around the timing belt or accessory belt area, deserves prompt attention.

Look underneath the car and where it is parked

A clean driveway or garage floor makes leaks easier to spot. After the car has been parked, look underneath the front of the vehicle for coloured liquid or a watery patch with a sweet smell. Coolant can also run along an undertray or engine component before dripping somewhere well away from the actual leak, so do not assume the lowest wet point is the source.

Water dripping from underneath the car is not always a concern. On a warm day, clear water near the passenger side is often condensation from the air conditioner. Coolant is more likely to have colour, feel slightly slippery and leave a residue once dry. Do not taste or handle unknown fluids. Coolant is toxic to people and animals, so clean spills carefully and keep pets away from them.

A slow leak may only show up after the engine has reached operating temperature and the system has built pressure. That is why a driveway check is useful, but it is not a complete diagnosis.

Check for leaks inside the cabin

Not every coolant leak ends up on the road. The heater core, which provides warm air through the cabin vents, can leak inside the vehicle. Common signs include a sweet smell through the vents, windows fogging up more than usual, damp carpet around the front footwells or an oily film on the inside of the windscreen.

A leaking heater core can be difficult to reach and should be assessed properly. Continuing to drive with low coolant can damage the engine, while coolant-soaked carpet can create an ongoing odour and moisture problem inside the car.

Watch for signs that are not visible leaks

If the coolant reservoir is dropping but you cannot find any external leak, the cooling system may be losing coolant internally. This is not something to diagnose by guesswork, as several faults can produce similar symptoms.

Warning signs can include repeated overheating, the temperature gauge rising and falling, poor heater performance, bubbling in the coolant reservoir, white exhaust smoke after the engine has warmed up, or a rough start that clears after a few seconds. In some cases, oil may appear milky or contaminated, although this is not present with every internal coolant leak.

These symptoms can point to issues such as a failed head gasket, a cracked component or another fault affecting combustion gases and coolant passages. Stop driving if the engine overheats or the temperature warning light comes on. Pull over safely, switch the engine off and let it cool. Driving on while overheated can turn a repairable cooling fault into major engine work.

Use the right approach when topping up coolant

If the reservoir is low and you need to drive the car a short distance for inspection, use only the coolant type specified for your vehicle. The owner’s handbook is the best starting point. In an emergency, clean water may be used temporarily in some conventional vehicles, but it is not a long-term substitute for the correct coolant mixture and should be replaced properly as soon as possible.

Do not overfill the reservoir. Fill only to the correct cold-level mark, wipe away any spills and recheck the level over the next few trips. Keep a note of how quickly it drops. A level that falls again within days, or after one longer drive, needs attention.

Modern vehicles can have complex cooling systems with electric water pumps, multiple thermostats, turbocharger cooling circuits and plastic components that become brittle with age. For hybrids and EVs, coolant may also be used to manage battery or high-voltage component temperatures. These systems should be inspected by a qualified technician rather than treated as a standard radiator top-up job.

When a pressure test is the sensible next step

A visual check will find many leaks, but it cannot always find a small crack or a leak that appears only under pressure. A workshop pressure test uses the correct adaptor to pressurise the cooling system with the engine off. This can reveal seepage from hoses, radiator tanks, water pumps, thermostat housings and other components without the risk of running an overheating engine.

Further testing may be needed if coolant is disappearing internally. Depending on the symptoms, a mechanic may inspect the cooling system, test the radiator cap, check for combustion gases in the coolant and assess the engine’s condition. The right test matters because replacing parts based on a guess can waste money and leave the original fault unresolved.
