Is EV Servicing Needed? Newcastle Drivers' Guide

An EV does not need oil changes, spark plugs or exhaust repairs, but that does not mean it is maintenance-free. So, is EV servicing needed? Yes. Electric vehicles still rely on tyres, brakes, suspension, steering, cooling systems, batteries and electronic safety systems that need regular attention. Missing servicing can affect safety, reliability, resale value and, in some cases, your statutory warranty.

For Newcastle drivers, that matters just as much as it does for petrol or diesel vehicles. School runs, commuting, stop-start traffic, wet roads and rough patches around town all put wear on the parts underneath your EV, even when there is no engine to service.

Is EV servicing needed if there is no engine?

Yes. An EV has fewer moving mechanical parts than a conventional car, which generally means there are fewer routine items to replace. There is no engine oil, oil filter, timing belt, fuel filter or conventional exhaust system. That can reduce some servicing costs over the life of the vehicle.

However, an electric car is still a car. It has a high-voltage battery system, electric drive motor, reduction gear, brake system, cabin air-conditioning, cooling circuits, 12-volt battery, tyres, wheel bearings, suspension and steering components. Each system has its own inspection or maintenance requirements.

The common mistake is assuming that because the car feels quiet and drives well, nothing needs checking. EVs are often very smooth, and regenerative braking can make brake pads last longer. But longer-lasting parts still need inspection. Brake discs can develop surface corrosion, tyres can wear quickly under the instant torque and extra vehicle weight, and suspension or steering issues may not be obvious until they become more serious.

What is checked during EV servicing?

The exact work depends on the make, model, age and manufacturer service schedule. A proper EV service should follow the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements rather than applying a one-size-fits-all checklist.

A qualified technician will commonly inspect the brakes, including pad condition, disc corrosion, calipers and brake fluid. Because regenerative braking does much of the slowing down, conventional brakes may be used less often. That is good for pad life, but it can allow calipers to stick or discs to rust if they are not checked and serviced when needed.

Tyres deserve close attention. EVs are usually heavier than similar petrol vehicles and deliver torque immediately, particularly in the rear tyres. Correct tyre pressures, tread depth, tyre condition and wheel alignment all affect handling, range and tyre life. An alignment check can be worthwhile if the car pulls, the steering wheel is off-centre or tyre wear is uneven.

The service may also include checks of the suspension, steering, underbody, lights, wipers, washer fluid, cabin filter, air-conditioning system and 12-volt battery. The small 12-volt battery is easy to overlook, but it is responsible for powering key vehicle electronics and allowing the main high-voltage system to start correctly. A weak 12-volt battery can leave an EV unable to drive, even when the traction battery has plenty of charge.

Depending on the vehicle, cooling system checks can also be required. Many EVs use coolant to manage battery, inverter and motor temperatures. This is not the same as an engine cooling system, but the fluid level, condition, hoses and system integrity still matter. Some manufacturers specify coolant replacement at set intervals.

High-voltage cables, connectors and battery protection components should be inspected by technicians trained to work safely around EV systems. These components are not a DIY job. High-voltage systems require the correct safety procedures, insulated equipment and diagnostic knowledge.

How often should an EV be serviced?

Your owner’s handbook and manufacturer service schedule should be the starting point. Many EVs have service intervals of 12 months, while some allow longer periods or set a kilometre interval as well. The correct timing varies between manufacturers, so do not assume your mate’s EV schedule applies to yours.

Even if you drive very little, annual servicing is usually sensible. Time affects brake fluid, tyres, wiper rubbers, cabin filters, coolant and the 12-volt battery. A car that sits in the garage most of the week can still develop issues.

If you cover high kilometres around Newcastle, regularly tow, carry heavy loads in a 4WD-style EV, travel on rough roads or spend time near the coast, inspections may be needed more often. Salt air, water, dust and hard use can all accelerate wear on ordinary vehicle components.

Your vehicle may also display a service reminder. Treat it as a prompt to check the manufacturer’s requirements, not something to reset and ignore.

EV servicing and your warranty

You do not always have to return to a dealership for routine servicing. In Australia, an independent workshop can carry out log book servicing without automatically voiding your statutory warranty, provided the work is completed to the manufacturer’s specifications, suitable parts and fluids are used where required, and accurate service records are kept.

That said, there are limits. Manufacturer recalls, warranty campaigns and certain software updates may need to be completed by the dealer or authorised brand network. Some EV models also have specialised diagnostic procedures or battery-system work that requires manufacturer-specific equipment.

A good workshop will be upfront about what can be completed independently and when dealer involvement is the right call. The important thing is not simply getting a stamp in a book. It is having the correct work done, at the right interval, with a clear record of what was inspected and replaced.

Keep your invoices and service documentation with the vehicle. They help support warranty claims, maintain a service history for the next owner and show that the vehicle has been looked after properly.

Why EV brakes, tyres and suspension still need attention

The parts that connect your EV to the road are often the parts that need the most regular care. A traction battery may be designed to last for years, but tyres do not have that luxury.

Under-inflated tyres can reduce driving range and cause uneven wear. Over-inflation can make the ride harsher and reduce grip. Because EVs can be heavier, choosing tyres with the correct load rating is essential. Do not fit a cheaper tyre simply because it is the same size - it needs to suit the vehicle’s weight and manufacturer requirements.

Suspension and steering checks are equally worthwhile. Potholes, kerbs and everyday road wear can affect bushes, ball joints, shock absorbers and alignment. If your EV feels unsettled, clunks over bumps, wanders on the road or chews through tyres, book an inspection before a small issue turns into a larger repair.

Regenerative braking is a major benefit of EV ownership, particularly in city driving. But it should not be relied on as a reason to skip brake maintenance. Brakes are still a critical safety system, and their condition needs to be checked at every scheduled service.

Battery health is not the same as routine servicing

When people ask whether an EV needs servicing, they are often really asking about the large traction battery. Battery health matters, but it is not usually maintained through regular replacement parts in the way an engine is.

The battery management system monitors cell temperatures, charging and overall operation. A technician can check for fault codes, inspect related cooling components and identify warning signs that need further diagnosis. But a simple annual service cannot guarantee a particular battery capacity or prevent all long-term battery degradation.

Charging habits, climate, vehicle age and kilometres can all influence battery condition. Following the manufacturer’s charging guidance, avoiding physical damage to the underbody and acting quickly on warning lights are practical steps that can help protect the system.

If the vehicle has been involved in an accident, driven through deep water or has damage underneath, have it assessed before continuing to drive or charge it. High-voltage battery cases and cables should never be ignored after an impact.

Choosing the right workshop for EV servicing

EV servicing calls for more than a standard checklist. The workshop should have technicians with appropriate EV training, safe high-voltage procedures and the diagnostic capability to inspect the vehicle properly. Experience with conventional vehicles still matters too, because most of an EV’s safety and wear items are familiar mechanical systems.
