A tank of poor-quality fuel can turn a normally reliable car into one that is hard to start, rough to drive or suddenly down on power. Knowing the best signs of fuel contamination gives you a better chance of stopping a small fuel-system issue before it becomes an expensive repair to injectors, pumps or filters.

Fuel contamination is not always caused by a bad servo. Water can enter fuel through condensation, damaged seals or a contaminated storage tank. Dirt, rust and sediment can find their way into older fuel systems, while accidentally filling up with the wrong fuel can cause immediate and serious problems. Diesel vehicles are particularly vulnerable to water contamination, but petrol vehicles can be affected too.

Best signs of fuel contamination to watch for

The symptoms can vary between petrol, diesel, 4WD and modern direct-injection vehicles. A single symptom does not automatically mean contaminated fuel, as ignition faults, blocked filters and sensor problems can feel similar. But if several of these signs begin soon after filling the tank, fuel quality should be checked early.

Hard starting or no start after filling up

If your vehicle cranks longer than usual, starts and stalls, or will not start after a recent fill-up, contaminated fuel is one possible cause. Water does not burn like petrol or diesel, so enough water in the fuel supply can prevent the engine from firing properly.

In a diesel, water can interfere with the high-pressure fuel system and cause damage well beyond a simple starting issue. Do not keep cranking the engine in the hope it will clear itself. That can circulate contaminated fuel further through the system.

Rough idle, misfiring or hesitation

An engine that idles unevenly, splutters under acceleration or hesitates when pulling away may be receiving inconsistent fuel. Contamination can restrict fuel flow or affect combustion, leaving the engine feeling rougher than normal.

You may notice this most clearly when joining traffic, climbing a hill or towing. A 4WD carrying a load can make the issue more obvious because the engine needs a steady fuel supply under greater demand.

Sudden loss of power

A noticeable drop in power shortly after refuelling is worth taking seriously. The car may feel flat, struggle to maintain speed or take longer to respond when you press the accelerator. In some cases, it may enter reduced-power mode and display a warning light.

This can happen when debris blocks a fuel filter or when water affects combustion. It may also be caused by another mechanical fault, so proper diagnosis matters. Continuing to drive a vehicle that is losing power can leave you stranded or increase the repair bill.

Engine warning light or fuel-system fault messages

Modern vehicles monitor fuel delivery, combustion and emissions closely. Contaminated fuel can trigger the engine warning light because the computer detects misfires, poor fuel pressure or unusual sensor readings.

The light alone cannot confirm the cause, but the timing is useful. If it appears soon after you have filled up and is accompanied by rough running or poor performance, tell your mechanic where and when you bought the fuel. Keeping the receipt can help establish the sequence of events.

Smoke, unusual exhaust smell or poor economy

Fuel that is not burning correctly can create more exhaust smoke, a strong fuel smell or a sudden increase in fuel consumption. Diesel vehicles may produce excess smoke under acceleration, while petrol engines may smell rich or run unevenly.

Poor economy by itself is not proof of contamination. Tyre pressures, driving conditions, towing, blocked air filters and mechanical faults all play a part. However, a sharp change combined with other symptoms is reason to have the vehicle checked.

Water or debris found in the fuel filter

This is one of the clearest physical signs, particularly in diesel vehicles with a water-separating fuel filter. A technician may find water, fine sediment, rust particles or discoloured fuel during inspection.

Many late-model diesels have a water-in-fuel warning. Treat it as an urgent warning, not something to put off until the next service. Water can cause corrosion and damage precision components in common-rail diesel systems, which are costly to replace.

What causes fuel contamination?

Contamination can occur at different points between the fuel supplier and your vehicle. Water is common, especially where fuel has been stored for a long time or where a tank has been exposed to moisture. Dirt and sediment may come from an ageing vehicle fuel tank, degraded fuel lines or contaminated storage equipment.

Incorrect fuel is a separate but equally urgent issue. Putting petrol into a diesel vehicle can damage the fuel pump and injectors because petrol does not provide the lubrication diesel components need. Diesel in a petrol car may cause smoke, poor running and starting trouble. The amount added, whether the engine was started and how far the vehicle was driven all affect the next step.

Fuel can also deteriorate when a vehicle sits unused for months. This is more common with weekend cars, boats, machinery and vehicles that have been off the road. Old fuel can form deposits and absorb moisture, particularly where tank levels have been allowed to remain low over long periods.

What to do if you suspect bad fuel

Your response should depend on how severe the symptoms are. If you have just realised you used the wrong pump, do not start the engine. Move away from the bowser safely if possible, then arrange for the vehicle to be assessed and the tank drained.

If the engine is already running badly, avoid driving any further than necessary. Pull over safely if the vehicle is misfiring, losing power, smoking heavily or displaying warning lights. Driving on contaminated fuel may push debris and water beyond the tank and filter into injectors, pumps and other components.

When speaking with a workshop, provide the vehicle make, model, fuel type and details of the recent fill-up. Mention when the symptoms began and whether anyone else who filled up at the same location has had a problem. This helps narrow down whether the issue is likely fuel-related or another fault that happened at the same time.

A proper inspection may involve checking fault codes, fuel pressure, the fuel filter and a sample of the fuel itself. Depending on the result, the repair could be as straightforward as draining contaminated fuel and replacing a filter, or it may require cleaning the system and assessing damaged components. It depends on the fuel type, contamination level and how long the vehicle has been driven.

Can you prevent fuel contamination?

There is no need to overthink every fill-up, but a few sensible habits reduce the risk. Use reputable fuel outlets, keep receipts when practical and avoid filling from a bowser that appears to be having issues. If a fuel delivery truck is actively filling underground tanks, some drivers choose to return later, as sediment can be disturbed during delivery.

Keep your vehicle maintained on schedule, including fuel-filter replacement where required. This is especially important for diesel utes, 4WDs and vehicles used for towing or regular long-distance driving. A clean filter is not a cure for bad fuel, but it is an important line of defence.

For vehicles that sit unused, aim to keep fuel reasonably fresh and avoid leaving the tank near empty for extended periods. If you are storing a vehicle, ask your mechanic about the right approach for its age, fuel type and intended storage period.
