An engine needs the right mix of air, fuel, compression and spark at the right time. When one or more cylinders fail to burn that mixture properly, the engine misfires. The result can be anything from a small hesitation under acceleration to a vehicle that feels unsafe or struggles to start.
What an engine misfire feels like
Misfires do not always feel the same. In some cars, the engine may shake noticeably at idle and smooth out once you are moving. In others, it may only stumble while climbing a hill, towing, accelerating hard or driving in wet weather.
Common signs include rough running, reduced power, poor fuel economy, difficult starting, a fuel smell from the exhaust and unusual vibration through the steering wheel or cabin. You may also hear popping from the exhaust. If the check engine light is flashing, treat it seriously. Before an inspection, make a note of whether the problem occurs when the engine is cold or hot, at certain speeds, during acceleration, or with the air conditioning on. Also note any warning lights, recent repairs and changes in fuel use. This does not replace testing, but it helps narrow the diagnostic path and can save time.
Modern vehicles store fault codes when the engine computer detects a problem. A scan tool may identify a misfire on a particular cylinder, or show related faults involving fuel trims, ignition timing or sensors. That is a starting point, not a final diagnosis. A code for cylinder three misfire does not automatically mean cylinder three needs a new spark plug or coil.
The common causes of a misfire
Worn spark plugs, coils and ignition faults
Petrol engines rely on a strong spark. Spark plugs wear over time, their gaps increase and deposits can build up. Ignition coils, leads on older vehicles and coil connectors can also fail. Heat and vibration under the bonnet are hard on electrical components, particularly as a vehicle ages.
A worn plug may cause a mild hesitation before becoming a constant misfire. A failing coil can be more intermittent, often showing up under acceleration when the engine needs a stronger spark. Replacing plugs at the manufacturer’s specified interval is good preventative maintenance, but fitting parts without confirming the cause can waste money.
Fuel delivery problems
Each cylinder needs the correct amount of clean fuel. A blocked or faulty injector, weak fuel pump, restricted fuel filter where fitted, wiring issue or poor-quality fuel can affect combustion. Problems may be felt most clearly under load, when the engine is demanding more fuel.
Injector faults can be mistaken for ignition problems because the symptoms overlap. A technician may check fuel pressure, injector operation and engine data before recommending repairs. This matters because an injector replacement is not the same job or cost as replacing a spark plug.
Air leaks and intake faults
The engine computer calculates fuel delivery based on the air entering the engine. A split intake hose, leaking vacuum line, failed gasket or contaminated airflow sensor can upset that calculation. Too much unmetered air can create a lean mixture and cause rough running or misfires, especially at idle.
Air leaks are not always obvious from a quick look under the bonnet. Professional testing can locate leaks without dismantling parts unnecessarily. On turbocharged vehicles and many modern 4WDs, intake and boost leaks need careful checking because a small fault can have a noticeable effect on drivability.
Compression and mechanical problems
Not every misfire is electrical. Low compression from a burnt valve, worn piston rings, a head gasket problem or timing issue can prevent a cylinder from firing properly. These faults are less likely to be fixed with a tune-up and need proper mechanical assessment.
A compression or leak-down test helps establish whether the engine itself is healthy. Timing belt or timing chain issues can also affect valve timing and combustion. Where there is a rattle on start-up, persistent misfire, loss of power or a history of overdue timing belt replacement, it is best not to delay an inspection.
Sensors, wiring and engine management faults
Crankshaft and camshaft sensors, oxygen sensors, throttle components and wiring can all affect the way an engine runs. Corroded connectors, damaged wiring or a weak battery can create faults that appear and disappear.
For this reason, a quality diagnosis considers live scan data, electrical checks and the vehicle’s service history alongside the fault code. The aim is to identify the cause, not simply clear the warning light and hope it stays off.
Why changing parts first can cost more
It is tempting to search a fault code, buy the most likely part and fit it at home. Sometimes that works. Often, it means paying for plugs, coils or sensors that were not the actual problem.
For example, a single-cylinder misfire may be caused by a coil, but it could also be a damaged plug, injector fault, air leak near that intake port, poor compression or a connector issue. Swapping components between cylinders can provide clues on some vehicles, but it is not suitable for every setup and can create new problems if parts are fitted incorrectly.
There is also a safety and reliability trade-off. Continuing to drive with a misfire can damage the catalytic converter, increase fuel consumption and leave you short of power when merging or overtaking. If the engine light flashes, avoid hard acceleration and arrange a check as soon as practical.

A proper misfire inspection is methodical. It starts by confirming the concern, scanning for fault codes and looking at live engine information. From there, the mechanic checks the likely systems rather than assuming the first code tells the whole story.
Depending on the vehicle and symptoms, testing may include ignition components, plug condition, fuel pressure, injector operation, intake leaks, battery and charging voltage, sensor signals, compression and mechanical timing. The exact process depends on the make, model, engine type and whether the fault is constant or intermittent.
This approach is particularly worthwhile on modern vehicles, where engine management systems are more complex and access to components can take time. It is also relevant for vehicles that have missed servicing intervals, have high kilometres or have recently had other engine work completed.
Can you drive with an engine misfire?
A very minor, occasional hesitation may allow you to drive carefully to a booked appointment. That does not make it a fault to ignore. Misfires generally worsen over time, and the underlying cause may affect fuel economy, emissions and engine life.
Do not continue driving if the check engine light is flashing, the vehicle is shaking heavily, there is a strong fuel smell, the temperature gauge is climbing or power drops sharply. Pull over safely and seek professional advice. The cost of a tow or early inspection can be far less than replacing a damaged catalytic converter or repairing a more serious engine fault.
Preventing repeat misfire problems
Routine servicing gives ignition components, filters, fluids and engine condition a chance to be checked before a minor issue becomes a breakdown. Use the correct spark plugs and service parts for your vehicle, follow manufacturer service intervals and deal with warning lights early.
